I always enjoy getting invited to play golf with my friends, especially when it means getting to experience a new course. This day was no exception. I got to play Victoria Club in Riverside with Jarod DeAnda and Burt Neal, and the course was amazing.
Jarod always seems to be smiling, and is the best announcer for many of the car events, races and events in the actions sports drift world and I think formula 1 racing. He’s also pretty quick to get behind a golf ball and hit it.
Burt is someone I met back when I lived in Mesa, Arizona for about five years. He’s pretty much better than me at everything — besides skateboarding, of course. He’s also really good at creating and designing all kinds of rad stuff. Check out his Drip Sticks brand when I get the link up here. There’s some cool stuff there. #RespectTheGreens
I may look like a pro in these photos, but don’t be fooled. I’m a single-digit handicap, and I’ll admit that particular drive was pretty decent. But I still have a LOT to learn.
Golf reminds me a lot of skateboarding. So much of both comes down to repetition — doing the same thing over and over, trying to get it just right, with plenty of mess-ups in between. Some days everything seems to work. Other days, golf feels completely foreign, like I’ve never played the game before.
Being over 50 and no longer competing at a high level in skateboarding, golf has given me a new challenge. I get to compete against my friends, challenge myself, and learn something new every time I play.
That’s what I like about it. There’s always something to work on.
See you on the links, hopefully soon.
